Kotor, Montenegro
13 June 2015 - Our third visit to Kotor. This is still one of the magical stops - from the sail in through the fjord to the view of the battlements surrounding the town on the hill behind. The day was on of the hottest days of the trip and definately too hot and humid to climb the walls up to the Castle of St John. Several travelers on previous trips made the climb and exclaimed about the views. But, not to be for us. After a relaxing morning and late breakfast we ventured over to the old town area. We meandered the streets, climbed up the walls facing the harbor, and back through the labyrinth of narrow streets until we came back to the main square Trg od Oruzja. One of the places we did not see before was the PIma Palace. The Pima Palace was built after the 1667 earthquake. The palace portal with the terrace was built in the Renaissance style while the windows and upper balcony which lies on the twelve consoles were built in the Baroque style. The balcony rail is the work of Kotor blacksmiths. Above the main portal there is the coat of arms of the family Pima supported by two angels. The palace was reconstructed after the 1979 earthquake. Many of the buildings are from the time of Venetians and use these styles. While looking for souvenirs in a small shop we found some watercolors by a local artist, Tamara Bozovic. We purchased one that is a street scene with the Church of St Nicholas appearing in the background. We had walked down the same street and seen the same view!
After our visit into town we relaxed at the pool deck, visited with other travelers, and then cleaned up for dinner. This was a night we left open for going to the Restaurant/Main Dining Room to try out their menu. Dinner was okay as I recall, but not quite as good as we had enjoyed on the Wind. Afterwards we went to the Panorama Deck and met some German travelers - Thaddeus and Rita, and another couple from Switzerland. We joined them in the sitting area, with the night sky and warm sea breezes. We enjoyed several evenings of discussion and conversation with them throughout the days of the cruise. Next port is Corfu and our first shore excursion! Pre-cruise Posts We visited Kotor twice last year and enjoyed a day long excursion on the first stop and wandered old town on the second stop. The sail into Kotor through the fjord is extraordinary. The old town is just across the street from the pier and easily accessible. The churches in Kotor date back to the 9th century and range from very small to a large cathedral. The Venetian fortifications built up the hill and around the city remain in excellent condition. A number of folks on our last cruise walked the fortification up to the top and the Castel St John. They all described the view as incredible. You can read about our visits last year in the Med 2014 pages.
What we plan to do: Another day of self exploration is planned. If the weather is nice we may walk the fortifications up to the castle. Then wander through Old Town, the churches, and enjoy a refreshing Montenegran beer! We tried one at a sidewalk cafe last year and it was excellent!
